Pollutants in outdoor environment water, such as algae, microorganisms, feed and suspension particles etc., may adsorb on the sensing membrane of sensors, causing the signal drift. The deviation of signal is not available for the need of intelligent aquaculture. Presently, on-site manual cleaning and calibration is necessary for maintaining correct measurements. However, the process is time-consuming and labor-intensive for an outdoor culture pond. Our group possesses the experience of sensor fabrication and mechatronic system integration to develop a water-quality sensing device capable of autocalibration. The device can transport a calibration solution to the surface of sensing chips (pH, dissolved oxygen or conductivity) and replace the previous sample solution via a microfluidic design for the performance of on-site and in situ calibration and cleaning. The calibration and cleaning procedures can be also started by remote control, if users find an irregular signal. Each procedure of calibration and cleaning takes 0.6 mL calibration solution for 5 min. This technique has the advantages of extending life time of sensing chip, giving the correct water-quality parameters, unmanned calibration. The correct signal of water-quality parameters is useful for the establishment of aquaculture AToT system. In the future, aquaculture experts can develop artificial intelligent system by using the correct signal and database. The water-quality monitoring system combining an alarm APP can remind aquaculture farmers to precisely control the water quality, reducing fish mortality. The autocalibration technique can integrate different chemical sensors for the long-term monitoring application of industrial waste water, livestock waste water and environmental water.
